1 Corinthians 2:1-5, Proclaiming Christ Crucified

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified.

Paul was clever. I’ll give him that.

Did he really come to the Church at Corinth and not try his best to proclaim Christ? Well, of course not. But did he try to use lofty wisdom? I can’t see why not. Who wouldn’t want to appear wise? Other stories in the Bible have precedent that God would provide the words of wisdom needed in each situation.

Regardless, the point of this text shows that Paul knows that, at the core of the gospel, Jesus Christ hangs there on the cross and is also arisen from that pain and disappointment into something more.

God is with us in suffering. God is with you, now. Christ has been crucified, but Christ is also arisen.

Amen!
