1 Corinthians 2:1-5, Proclaiming Christ Crucified

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

When I came to you, brothers and sisters, I did not come proclaiming the mystery of God to you in lofty words or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I came to you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling. My speech and my proclamation were not with plausible words of wisdom, but with a demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might rest not on human wisdom but on the power of God.

Actions speak louder than words. Mind you, Paul used a lot of words. Like, a lot. Probably too many. But clearly by his own estimation, he wasn’t much of a public speaker. When he actually showed up to the churches he’d written long letters to, it wasn’t his commanding presence or witty repartee that convinced people to become Christians. It was his faith. That’s something powerful to experience.

Me? I’m a word person. Love words. Always have. Love to write them, love to speak them. And people have told me, when I’ve preached sermons, that I can be inspiring. But I don’t believe for one moment that such things leave a lasting impression on anyone. What has impressed me over and over in life, what has been the foundation of my faith, is the experience of others’ quiet and powerful living of their faith. My childhood Sunday School teacher. My parents. My sister-in-law. Their actions are far more profound than if they had sat me down to tell me all about their theology. I hope to follow their examples.

Who’s faithful actions have had the most profound effect on my beliefs?
