Given humanity’s propensity to rebel against God, I certainly understand the sentiment of the argument in this chapter of Romans. Indeed, I know many from both sides of the aisle who might argue for or against whatever trait they wish they didn’t (or do) have.
The point of today’s reading I believe is to challenge us. We are invited to consider the width, breadth, and depth to which God’s grace is willing to go. Throughout the entirety of Romans, the whole argument consistently falls back on the fact that, yes, each of us could sin all we wanted, and God would still forgive. But the whole point is that we were not created to be in constant rebellion with our Maker. Instead, we are gently beckoned to consider that there is a simpler, better way—the way of grace and trust.
Search my soul, O God. Help me to return to your path of righteousness. Amen.
