Romans 8:31-39, God’s Love in Christ Jesus

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Just let that sink in. I’ve heard this passage so many times in my life it’s easy to just sort of skim over it and nod my head. But when I slow down and really focus, register each phrase, savor each word…wow. I am blown away. Nothing—nothing!—can separate us from God’s love. Not oppressive systems, corrupt politicians, family turmoil, catastrophic health issues, our own deeply flawed character—nothing can get between us and God. In spite of, and in the midst of whatever is happening, God is there, holding, supporting, and loving us through it, sharing our place, suffering with us. The ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus said that “change is the only constant in life.” He wasn’t quite right. God is the only true constant. God is bigger, more present, and will never be separated from us, even in the face of change.

Constant God, thank you for your unyielding presence in my life. Amen.
