Romans 8:18-39, Pentecost

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words.

by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff

I have always drunk deeply from the well of reverie when I once again read the words from Romans 8:26. It’s more than simple nostalgia, either. When something touches my heart in such a profound way, I know exactly what it means to be at a loss for words.

Since I’m a professional freelance writer as well as keeping the day-to-day operations going here at Clergy Stuff, it can be a daunting hurdle to overcome as a writer! Writers cannot be at a loss for words, because we are set with the great task of describing exactly what it is that we want to describe.

I remember several times finding myself in the silent, holy space of not knowing what to say, but simply awash in the mystery of God’s grace and love. It’s not something I experience every day, but I sure wish I could make it happen more frequently.

That’s the thing, though . . .

Experiences when we are caught up in ecstasy cannot be contrived or manufactured. Spiritual experiences just . . . happen. And sometimes they happen at places we would never dream to look.

Am I open to allowing new spiritual experiences to mold and change me for God’s good work?
