Romans 8:1-17, Life in the Spirit

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
— Romans 8:5-6

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, May 31, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

As an American, I live in a culture entirely focused on “the things of the flesh.” Despite our nation’s wealth and abundance, we’re taught to believe there is never enough for us. Bigger, better, faster, more more more is the order of the day. Growing up steeped in this, it is an act of deliberate effort to pull my mind away from these things and focus them on the “things of the Spirit.”

And what are these things? They are too numerous to count, but we can start by remembering the list in Galatians: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These are the beautiful fruits we yield in our lives and our communities when we turn our hearts and minds to the Spirit.

Holy Spirit, call me back to you again and again, and show me the truth of my misdirected attention. Amen.
