forest app

by Dr. Kimberly Leetch, Clergy Stuff

We live in a world that is, perhaps, more chaotic than at any other time in history. I mean on a daily basis, we are bombarded with more information, input, visual and auditory stimulation than ever before. We are over-connected (tech at our fingertips) and under-connected (lack of human connection) at the same time. We take our laptops on vacation and sleep with our phones. Each day can seem overwhelming at times, with no end in sight.

But then we are reminded, “In the Lord I take refuge.” God is always immediately available for a moment of solitude and peace. Sometimes all it takes is for us to turn everything off for a few minutes and reconnect with God through deep breathing, meditation, or a quiet walk. Even 3 minutes can do wonders for our mental, emotional, and physical health.

Ironically, I found an app this holiday that encourages taking a break from our phones. Forest invites you to plant a virtual tree (and yes, with your earned coins you can even plant real ones!) on your phone. Here’s the catch: if you leave the app to do something else on your phone, your tree dies. If your tree lives, you can plant it in your forest and have a visual representation of all the time you spent not on your phone. Pretty cool, huh? Maybe you could plant some trees today and seek refuge in the Lord!

Narrative Lectionary Daily Reading:

Psalm 11:1-3

In the Lord I take refuge; how can you say to me, “Flee like a bird to the mountains;

for look, the wicked bend the bow, they have fitted their arrow to the string, to shoot in the dark at the upright in heart.

If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?”
