Psalm 98:7-9, Psalm

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy at the presence of the Lord, for he is coming to judge the earth.
— Psalm 98:8-9a

Judgement hardly seems like cause for celebration. But that’s because we’re conditioned to see judgment as a negative. And to be fair, our tendencies to judge other people is a negative thing. Plus we’re probably afraid of God’s judgment because we’re well aware that we’ve fallen way short in more than one place in our lives.

But here’s the thing. God’s judgment is cause for celebration. Because it’s perfect. It’s not about us getting our comeuppance for our imperfection. It’s not even about the people we think deserve punishment getting theirs. It’s about blowing the world wide open to God’s reign, where judgment leads to God’s divine justice for the whole of creation, where the hills can’t help but singing and neither can we because everyone and everything is living in complete harmony, equity, abundance, and overflowing love. That’s something worth celebrating.

Do I see the concept of judgment as positive or negative.
