Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Monday, March 4, 2019
by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff
I’ve never experienced a full-on betrayal from a good friend before. I hear people who do have a difficult time learning to trust another again.
The psalmist recalls in this reading how the whole world seems to be against them (and yes, I’m using a plural pronoun here for the sake of inclusiveness, and for the bare fact that we don’t really know the gender of the person who wrote the Psalms).
The whole point is that even when the whole world seems against you, you can still turn to God. Because God knows about betrayal firsthand. I’ve got to wonder what Judas had been thinking when he betrayed Jesus.
The Psalms encompass all of the human experience. Unfortunately, the whole human experience includes lots of betrayals and disappointments. Fortunately for us, we have a God who knows these experiences directly and opens God’s loving arms for us, unconditionally.
Lord in Heaven . . . you know what it feels like to be betrayed. Never cease to wrap your loving arms around me when those times come for me, too. Amen.
