Your righteousness is like the mighty mountains, your judgments are like the great deep; you save humans and animals alike, O Lord.

I was a biology major. Not because I wanted to work in a lab or go on to medical school. I just loved nature. All my life. Especially frogs. Creation is breathtaking. Mind-blowing. Moving. Beautiful in every way.

In Elizabeth Johnson’s Creation and the Cross: the Mercy of God for a Planet in Peril, she digs deep into how God in Christ redeems all of creation, not just people. It’s wonderful to recognize the theological movements this is part of especially in light of the way humans have always treated creation as theirs to destroy at their whim. This brief snippet of Psalm 36 is just one tiny example of the myriad ways the Bible affirms God’s redemption of creation. God saves humans and animals alike. Even frogs. Maybe especially frogs.

Creating God, open my eyes to the fragile beauty and wonder of all that you have made, and inspire me to work for its healing and wholeness. Amen.
