Psalm 40, God Hears Our Cry

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

I waited patiently for the Lord; he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the desolate pit, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure.
He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the Lord.
— Psalm 40:1-3

I can’t help but sing this one. Thanks, U2. (Yes, I was a teenager in the 80s). So much so that I have to keep rereading the words to find something constructive to write about them in a devotion!

I’ll keep it simple. This last year has been a serious challenge for me, and not just because of the pandemic, state violence toward BIPOC folks, or the political meltdowns going on in our country. In the past 12 months, I divorced, which brough with it a whole slew of personal, spiritual, and financial stresses, and got some scary health news, among other things.

And in spite of all of this? I am happy. I feel peaceful and present with God. I feel like I’m not a stranger in my own life for the first time in decades. It’s all God, folks. All of it. God has put in a new song in my mouth and I ain’t gonna stop singing it. Amen.

When have I felt that God has set my feet on a rock in the midst of the shaky ground of my challenges?
