Psalm 22, No One to Help

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help.
— Psalm 22:11

About a decade ago, I was hunting elk in the Colorado mountains. There was one moment that our guide told me that he would meet me on the side of another ridge in 1/2 hour as he went to check another valley to see if the elk herd had gone there. It began to snow.

I was up in the mountains and there wasn’t another soul for miles and miles around us. It was a real wilderness experience! In that moment, I became terrified.

What if I twist my ankle and I can’t meet the guide?

What if I suddenly had a heart attack up here because of the strain, the cold and the altitude?

Being alone is never a good feeling. Reminding ourselves that God is always there for us is sometimes difficult to believe. In my times of loneliness, I keep going back to praying though. Why?

Perhaps it’s because, ultimately, I trust that someone will hear me in my isolation, and that I will always be under the wing of the Almighty. That is my hope, at least!

What do you do when you feel alone?
