Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

What did the psalmist mean that our hearts “instruct” us at night?
I’m not sure. But I do know that often right before I go to sleep (especially that I’m getting older and I think about much more than I used to) I often think about death.
It’s sad to say, but I fear death. I fear non-existence. I fear what is to come.
Then, I remember God’s promises.
Then, I think that it might all be made up.
Then, I say to myself, so what?! It doesn’t matter that' it’s made up! It’s truth through the story, God’s story!
Then I think of the wonders of the universe, its size, the actual miracle of existence itself.
Then . . . I sleep.
The Lord instructs me. And God does this for you, too.
Lord, calm my fearful heart. When it tells me to be afraid, may your word instead break into my life and give me your assurances. Amen.
