Psalm 147, A Song of Praise is Fitting

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Praise the Lord! How good it is to sing praises to our God; for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.

Music is deeply connected to circumstance. There are times when only a sad song will do. Or a loud, angry, abrasive song. Or a lullaby or a contemplative folksy song. And then there are those times when a song of praise is fitting.

A song of praise is fitting any time we stop long enough to remember just what God has done, to remember God’s grace and mercy, which we cannot earn, but is freely given. How rarely I find myself stopping to reflect on just this thing, which is so much a constant of all existence! The only response is a song of praise. A joyful noise. An expression of inexpressible gratitude.

As a child, my favorite hymn to sing in church was Let All Things Now Living. Such a song is always fitting. I hope you’re singing it now.

What is my favorite song of praise?
