Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of human hands.
They have mouths, but they do not speak; they have eyes, but they do not see;
they have ears, but they do not hear, and there is no breath in their mouths.”

Idols are empty things. God is a living, vibrant, abundant God, filled with the breath of Spirit, a breath which God breathes into each and every one of us. Yet how often do I find myself turning to the works of human hands for my comfort?
Just this morning I found myself emotionally uncomfortable and suddenly I was shopping online. What the heck? Yep. Looking for an idol of silver and gold, the work of human hands, to satisfy a spiritual need. News flash: it doesn’t work.
It turned my attention to writing these devotions, to digging into God’s word and reflecting on all the ways God moves, inspires, delights, exhorts, and transforms me, and, of course, the urge to shop online vanished. No earthly idol could accomplish such a change in me. Thanks be to God, who hears and has the breath of life.
Vibrant God, call me back into communion with you, the only source of life. Amen.
