Psalm 123, Psalm of Lament

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he has mercy upon us.
— Psalm 123:2

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, June 28, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

Why is it that I keep thinking I ought to be the one in charge of everything? From the minor challenges of my day-to-day life to the rampant injustice in the world, I think I have the answers. That if everyone just listened to me, things would be perfect.

When I get into that mind set, the inevitable result is frustration and, if left unchecked, despair.

When I turn my eyes to the Lord my God, I am finally looking in the right direction. I am but one among many, fully dependent upon God for all that I am and all that I have. This Psalm of Lament directs me away from my own willfulness and back to my source, the One whose mercy is sure.

Gracious and Merciful God, in my troubles, keep my eyes on you alone. Amen.
