Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Friday, March 20, 2020

Honestly? Sometimes I just forget about God. When I’m faced with a challenge or a crisis, I go into survival mode, the old fight-or-flight response that’s hardwired by evolution into my brain. I hunker down and try to barrel through on my own resources. I look to money, effort, other people to rescue me. And when my resources fail me, which they so often do, I sink into self-pity, feeling like somebody owes me.
In those cases, I’m looking for help in all the wrong places, and I will find no peace in acceptance, or resolution of the issue until “I lift up my eyes to the hills.” That is, until I give up trying to run the universe and look to God for help. God, who is the creator of all that is, will certainly uplift and sustain me in my troubles. When I turn to God, I nearly always find that whatever challenge or crisis I was facing becomes more manageable.
Where do I find myself looking for help in times of challenge or crisis?
