Hebrews 1:1-4, God Has Spoken by His Son

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Long ago God spoke to our ancestors in many and various ways by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by a Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom he also created the worlds.

God has been speaking to us since the creation of all that is. And the language God speaks is Jesus. The Word through which all was spoken into being, and the Word through which God spoke reconciliation and redemption.

I hear God speaking everywhere. In the wind through the trees, the sigh of a sleeping child, the rain on the roof, a hymn tune played on a violin. God calls us into peace and joy in those moment.

But God also speaks in the noise, in the cries of the oppressed, the cracking and breaking of melting ice caps, the sound of gunshots in school hallways. God is crying out to all of us, calling us to action on behalf of all who are hurting. Jesus is the Word of healing and reconciliation, the Word God speaks to us in our broken world.

God has spoken and continues to speak. How will we listen today?

Where do I hear God’s voice in the world?
