Psalm 113, God the Helper of the Needy

The tagline of my denomination (the ELCA) is “God’s Work. Our Hands.” I love this. What it says to me is that God is powerful and is at work in the world for the good of all creation, and that God can and does work through God’s people—all God’s people (which is everyone, Christian or not). It tells me that I am called to “raise the poor from the dust, and lift the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes.” Sure, I don’t have direct power to do this for all people everywhere all the time—I’m not God. But gosh darn it, I can’t just sit by and wait for other people to figure this stuff out. I can’t do everything, but I can do something and by God’s grace, that something can make a difference. So it’s up to me to ask questions and find out all the somethings available to me, and do them.

Where has God worked through my hands in the world?
