Psalm 111, Psalm of . . . Fear?

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever.
— Psalm 111:10

NL Daily Devotion for Tuesday, March 10, 2020

Most of us know that the phrase “the fear of the Lord” does not mean being truly fearful or terrified (or afraid) of God. However, like most words, this type of “fear” has lost its meaning through the ages, even more so today.

Fear of God instead translates into an awe or “that which brings one to one’s knees” in reverential ecstasy.

However, for today’s daily devotional for the Narrative Lectionary, I’d like briefly to look at the true fear aspect of really looking into the infinite. Peering into the abyss of existence, and considering the size of the whole universe, a person can feel extremely small and out of control. I mean, what parent hasn’t felt the slightest tinge of panic upon realizing that his or her kid has gone missing in a crowd of people?

Some days, it feels as if the crowd has usurped us all. Swallowed into the whole of the monstrosity of creation, it only makes sense that something BIGGER might have something to say worth listening to.

Worth falling to one’s knees in awe and fear.

God, grant me the courage to face the day, and may my awe of your power turn my life around. Amen.
