Of all the topics that the Psalms from the Hebrew Bible deal with, one that cannot be assumed is moralism. At first glance, it appears that this is what the exhortations in the Psalms look like—the Psalmist encouraging the reader (or listener) to behave a certain way.

However, what the Psalms are really concerned with is expressing what the Psalmist themselves is experiencing and encouraging themselves to do. (And, yes, I realize I’m using a plural to omit any gender bias in the pronoun. It’s acceptable now!)

What’s more, this Psalm in particular is an encouragement to trust, even when everything seems like it’s gone to the dogs.

How can scripture influence you to trust more without being overly simplistic or moralistic? What are your thoughts?
