Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wonderful works.”

I LOVE to sing! And how mind-boggling that this is just a part of our human makeup! God created us to sing—gave us the vocal chords that make it possible, the awareness of melody, the desire to put thoughts into verse and verse into song. As the old hymn goes, “how can I keep from singing?”
I remember when my son was just a toddler, playing with his toys on the floor. He would hum background music as he went, like a little movie soundtrack. I can’t get him to sing now to save my life (he’s 20) but I know it’s in there. A couple months ago, we were in the car and playing one of our favorite Carbon Leaf records and all of a sudden he starts singing along—all the words, right on pitch, as if he did this every day. I was flabbergasted. But I sang with him all the way to the end of the song and it. was. glorious.
No, we weren’t singing about God’s wonderful works. And yet, yes we were. Because he is one of them, and our voices are another, and that moment of sublime interconnectedness was transcendent. Amen! Alleluia!
Musical God, fill my heart with your song, that I might sing my life to your praise. Amen.
