Monday, Psalm 84:1-7, Beauty of God's Word (and World!)

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O Lord of hosts, my King and my God.
— Psalm 84:3

There are times reading holy scripture, when I simply sit back in my chair, mouth agape, and wonder how those ancient writers could have captured such beauty. That’s exactly my experience in reading this Psalm.

The Psalms, in particular, contain some beautiful poetry we read nowhere else. Sadly, Biblical illiteracy seems to be on the rise. Now, understand, I’m not stating this because I somehow believe that we should put mandatory bible classes in public schools. Not at all. All I’m saying is that people need to cherish the heritage and beauty we have in scripture—all scripture (including non-Christian or non-Jewish).

For this, though, I’m simply content knowing that a little bird could flit about God’s altar and feel welcome. Just as you and I are welcome to be in God’s presence.

Thanks be to God.
