Isn’t it interesting that, in the Gospels, Jesus continually has to remind the religious leaders that God is about love and mercy? I mean, how could they have missed out on this point?

It’s telling not only to what was going on during that time, but it also reveals something about human nature. Namely, we always try to turn everything into a rule again.

Rules are great. Rules create order. Rules restrict sin. Rules can be life-giving, too.

But when rules become the message in-and-of themselves and the end-all to God’s proclamation, the message becomes life-denying, not life-giving.

In what ways do we make God’s message of the gospel about more laws, more rules?
