Matthew 22:34-46, The Greatest Commandment

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

You shall love your neighbour as yourself.
— Matthew 22:39

NL Daily Devotion for Wednesday, April 3, 2019

by Stefanie K. Fauth, Clergy Stuff

We are told to love God - and to love your neighbor as yourself.

It seems easy, but my goodness it looks like the world is failing at loving the neighbor.

In seminary, someone mentioned in class, “It’s impossible to love others as ourselves if we don’t love ourselves.”

I was struck!

A lot of us don’t love ourselves like God loves us - honestly, fully, without excusing our bad behavior.

We can’t love ourselves in a way that ignores bad behavior - but we MUST find a way to love ourselves that isn’t critical or harsh.

Love yourself like God loves you.

Warts and all.

What does your self talk sound like? Does it echo your critique of others? How can you speak more kindly to yourself?
