Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, March 2, 2019
by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff
In the simplest terms, I believe what Jesus is telling his disciples in this story is that he uses parables so that those who think they are wise will not understand.
It’s strange; I could never figure out why Jesus seems to obfuscate everything. I mean . . . why doesn’t he just come out and say exactly what he means to say? But, perhaps, he does not do this because that’s not the way God functions.
God functions within parables & story—albeit sometimes very strange stories—for the very reason because God created human beings to live in relationship and through those stories. If you’ve ever read any of my books, you’ll know that one point comes out loud and clear, that human beings are story creatures.
So, Jesus hides the simplest truth of God’s grace to those who are “wise” and reveals it to children and those living in the story of the Good News.
Dear God, thank you for entering into my story. Keep me always questioning and striving to live in it with you. Amen.
