I gotta admit it. I empathize with the Pharisees.

There’s something primal and deeply centered in the need for proof. That, hoping beyond hope, we can feel the presence of God and the hope of the resurrection as something “real” for us.

I’m a skeptic at heart, which might come as a surprise to some. But lately, my faith never comes easily for me. I have to work at it.

It got me thinking that perhaps it’s this way by design.

Of course, I could always be just deluded, but I keep coming back to it. I would like a sign to make my faith “easier.” But would it be so, really?

I’m not sure. One thing I am sure of is that the only path for spiritual growth is through struggle. That much is clear. So, maybe it’s good that things are this way. Maybe that’s why Jesus, too, confronted the Pharisees in their need for a sign.

God, give me not a sign, but strengthen my faith in the ways you know best. Amen.
