Mark 6:53-56, Healing the Sick in Gennesaret

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized him, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was.
— Mark 6:54-55

NL Daily Devotion for Thursday, February 13, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

The word was out: Jesus could heal any illness. As soon as they saw him, the crowds would gather, bringing him the people in their lives who were sick, carrying them on mats if necessary. All for a word, a touch, the smallest demonstration of power. These were desperate people—oppressed, poor, hopeless. When a word of hope began to circulate among them, it spread like wildfire.

Jesus is still that word of hope in our lives, still that healing presence in the midst of whatever turmoil we face. We would do well to gather up our sorrows, our sickness, our cares and worries, to drag them on mats into the presence of Jesus, knowing that he sits with us in our hurt and confusion and experiences it with us, and that he can and does bring peace and healing.

Loving God, thank you for being right there with me in my life no matter what. Amen.
