Mark 16:19-20, The Ascension of Jesus

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Jesus leaves, yet Jesus doesn’t leave. I love that in verse 19 he’s taken up into heaven, and in verse 20 he’s still working with them. The physical person of Jesus is no longer walking among us, but Jesus is as immediate as the air we breathe, and works with us as we strive to carry out his commission. How wonderful to know that we are not expected to do this work alone! Because, of course, we simply could not. Not as individual people, not as groups of people or even entire communities or nations. No, if we are to proclaim the sacrificial and redemptive love of God across boundaries and to the whole earth, we need Jesus right there with us.

Gracious God, thank you for your eternal presence with us in Jesus Christ. Amen.
