Mark 16:14-18, Jesus Commissions the Disciples

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation.”
— Mark 16:15

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, April 17, 2020

The whole creation! Not just people, but every last thing in existence. We are called to proclaim God’s incomprehensible grace to all the earth, to share Christ’s sacrificial and redemptive love across boundaries, to build up and renew relationships with one another and the world upon which we make our home. What a beautiful and inspiring task with which we are entrusted!

Certainly, the rest of this passage is wildly problematic. I can’t advocate attempting to prove that you’re saved by picking up venomous snakes or drinking poison. Or condemning anyone who doesn’t believe as you believe—especially after Jesus just ripped the disciples themselves a new one for not believing what earlier witnesses to his resurrection said. So I will stick to following the direct command of Jesus: get out there and love the world and everyone in it!

God, inspire me each day to proclaim your eternal love for all that you have created in all that I do and say. Amen.
