Mark 14:3-9, Woman Anoints Jesus

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

While he was at Bethany in the house of Simon the leper, as he sat at the table, a woman came with an alabaster jar of very costly ointment of nard, and she broke open the jar and poured the ointment on his head.

NL Daily Devotion for Monday, April 6, 2020

by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff

I find it interesting that today’s daily reading from the Narrative Lectionary has been traditionally used as rationale for the existence of church buildings and pastor’s salaries. The argument, or so it goes, says that churches, like Jesus, are important entities worth giving to.

I’m not here to fight against this belief or to try to convince you to one side or the other. I have my opinions, yes, and so do you.

What’s more edifying for me to realize with this story is that Jesus took the woman’s action as an action of love from her. Jesus saw that the woman’s devotion to Jesus didn’t somehow outweigh her responsibility to the poor. Rather, her devotion, too, had value. As yours has value, in all its forms as well.

God, how can I focus my life better toward your will for me? Amen.
