Mark 14:10-11, Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them. When they heard it, they were greatly pleased, and promised to give him money. So he began to look for an opportunity to betray him.

NL Daily Devotion for Thursday, April 2, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

Would I betray Jesus for money? Of course I want to shout “No way!” But I was raised and live in a culture in which money is regularly put in the place of God. If I have enough money, do I even need God?

Jesus modeled a life of simplicity, poverty, and complete trust in God to meet his needs. He called others into a life in which reaching across boundaries and working for justice superseded all else. Is this how I live my life? Have I turned my back on Jesus in order to make myself comfortable?

These are loaded questions without simple answers. But as we approach Good Friday, it is good to examine with complete honesty just where we have sinned and fallen short.

Gracious God, forgive me for turning away from you in pursuit of material things. Amen.
