Mark 14:1-2, The Plot to Kill Jesus

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

It was two days before the Passover and the festival of Unleavened Bread. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him; for they said, “Not during the festival, or there may be a riot among the people.”

Nothing is more anxiety producing than not knowing what is “out there” to come and get you. As I write this, the world has been captured hostage by the threat of the novel coronavirus. The fear of fear compounds the issue and the stock markets and economy begin to run. For certain, the threat of a new illness is nothing new, but what I would like to highlight in today’s devotional for the Narrative Lectionary is the reaction to that fear is just as important to acknowledging the fear itself.

Jesus no doubt knew that there were those out to get him, to shut down his message of good news to the oppressed and poor. He was stirring the pot, rocking the boat, and those in power don’t like that. They like things to remain calm and optimistic, that everyone stay the course and it will all work out.

No one knows the extent to which this new virus will propagate in the world, nor the ultimate damage it will do to either the economy or to people’s lives. One thing is for certain, within it all, God will not abandon us and God will choose to stay the course of salvation no matter what.

How afraid are you of unseen threats? How does Jesus’ reaction to threats shift your confidence?

Italics prayer or question to finish.
