What an irony to read this story at this time of year! Unless you’re one of the few early birds who get their taxes done in February, chances are you’re still looking to sitting down to calculate how much you owe Uncle Sam. (Or what refund you’ll get back.)

Jesus made the brilliant distinction between the world’s way of functioning vs. God’s way. The things that belong to Caesar today included the taxes we pay to keep the roads open and kids in school. No one would argue that those things need to be removed. They’re necessary.

But just as necessary to our existence are the things that belong to God. What are those things?

A game of Scrabble with your elderly mother on a cold January afternoon.

Giving your daughter a hug before her first day at school and telling her you love her.

The money you spend not just to keep your church doors open, but for the future investment of proclaiming the Word and distributing the sacrament.

Those are just a few things.

Can you add to the list, the things that are God’s?
