Malachi 3:1-7, The Coming Messenger

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then I will draw near to you for judgment; I will be swift to bear witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired workers in their wages, the widow and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the alien, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.

I suppose I shouldn’t be explicitly political. But it can be so challenging to read the Bible and find places where it so clearly screams out that the way the U.S. government has been functioning is diametrically opposed to what appears to be God’s call. I mean, can it be clearer that it’s not okay to pay workers less than what it will cost for them to sustain themselves (i.e. our ridiculous federal minimum wage)? That it’s not okay to uphold policies that keep seniors and children (or anyone) living in poverty? That it’s not okay to kick out the people who seek asylum from intolerable circumstances in their own countries? To speak as if we’re a Christian nation and then act as if there is no god other than money and self-interest? I honestly just don’t get it.

Gracious God, help me to see where I am part of the problem, and empower me to be part of the solution. Amen.
