Luke 13:18-30, Parables

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

And again Jesus said, ‘To what should I compare the kingdom of God? It is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened.’
— Luke 13:20-21

I’ve baked bread on occasion. The amount of yeast needed to make the whole loaf rise is tiny in comparison to the rest of the ingredients. But that tiny bit of yeast transforms the entire mixture, causing it to become something amazing (and tasty!)

So it is with God. We don’t need to be Christian mystics or live in intentional community or dedicate every waking breath to divine communion in order to have our entire lives transformed by God’s incomprehensible love. The barest minimum of connection is enough to get us started, and as we live and grow in God’s grace, we become so much more than we were.

So it is with bringing God’s kingdom to the world we live in now. We may feel that we have no power to affect change in the systemic injustice, oppression, and hatred all around us. But in the immortal words of Margaret Mead, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

Transforming God, make me the yeast of your kingdom, that I may leaven the full measure of the world around me. Amen.
