Luke 13:10-17, Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

When he laid his hands on her, immediately she stood up straight and began praising God.
— Luke 13:13

NL Daily Devotion for Monday, March 1, 2021

by R. M. Fergus, Clergy Stuff

As the saying goes, “Give credit where credit is due.” The woman who was bent over knew instantly and immediately that it was God, in Jesus, who had healed her, so of course she immediately praised God for her recovery.

What about us? I live in a culture that worships individualism and self-sufficiency. We may call on God in the depths of despair and crisis, but when things turn around, the temptation is to forget God and take the credit ourselves. After all, didn’t we take the actions of x, y, and z, which ultimately led to the change? We forget that God was with us through the despair and crisis, that God gives us the power to take the necessary actions and walks through them with us, that God, ultimately, heals and transforms with and through us and those around us.

Healing God, keep me ever mindful of your transformative power, that I might stand up straight and praise you for all that you have done in my life. Amen.
