Joshua 1:1-11, God Calls Joshua

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, saying, “My servant Moses is dead. Now proceed to cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the Israelites.

Did you ever wonder about what all the “calling” business is in the Bible? I remember discussing our “call” we had received to enter the ministry. This was way back when I was still a pastor serving in the ELCA in western North Dakota.

I always thought it kind of funny that we use the term “call” or one’s “calling” in life. For most throughout history, the opportunity never arose from the standpoint of choice what that call was or where it came from. If you were a girl prior to the 20th century, your place was to make babies (a broad, unfair generalization, but not completely inaccurate). Most boys did what their fathers did.

A calling as we know today is something that’s a particularly modern phenomenon.

Besides, it would be nice if God simply yelled down to us and said, “Hey! This is what you gotta do now.” It’s not like that now, and I don’t think it was like that for Josh back when ol’ Moses kicked the bucket either.

Instead, I believe it was a gentle pulling inside, or maybe even not such a gentle pulling from outside.

Regardless, I believe calls do come.

Just not in as a buzzing cellphone in your front pocket.

How have you experienced a call in your life?
