Job 7, Tests of Faith

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

What are human beings, that you make so much of them, that you set your mind on them, visit them every morning, test them every moment?
— Job 7:17-18

I don’t believe God tests my faith. I do believe that life tests my faith. On a regular basis. But Job came from a culture in which it was believed any adversity that occurred in a person’s life was God punishing them for sins or testing to make sure their faith was firm. His life was so miserable, he just wanted God to leave him alone. Why are you bothering with me? Why can’t you go afflict something else for a while?

The truth is that God never leaves us alone, but not because God is waiting to catch us being “bad” and punish us. God is waiting to catch us in God’s loving arms when life takes us out at the knees. When life tests my faith, God holds me in my suffering until my faith recovers.

How is life testing my faith today?
