Job 29-30, Waiting for Light

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

But when I looked for good, evil came; and when I waited for light, darkness came.
— Job 30:26

NL Daily Devotion for Monday, July 6, 2020

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

Life happens. Job gives a long-winded recap of just how righteous he was before everything went south, and follows it with a long-winded recap of how completely everything turned around in short order. We have no guarantees. So many people believe, consciously or unconsciously, that if we do our best in life, if we’re “good” people, we ought to be exempt from suffering. Certainly that’s what Job’s friends told him. But it’s just utterly false. God does not reward or punish us based on our own merits or lack thereof. Suffering happens, and God is right there in the midst of it with us.

We may be waiting for light, and darkness may come. But we can’t give up waiting—and working—for light, trusting that God is working with and through us.

God, grant me patience and hold my aching heart in your loving arms.
