Jeremiah 34:1-7, Promise of Salvation

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

And you yourself shall not escape from his hand, but shall surely be captured and handed over to him; you shall see the king of Babylon eye to eye and speak with him face to face; and you shall go to Babylon. Yet hear the word of the Lord, O King Zedekiah of Judah! Thus says the Lord concerning you: You shall not die by the sword; you shall die in peace.
— Jeremiah 34:3-5a

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

Even when life is feels like a complete disaster, God has your back.  The kingdom of Judah had been living under Babylonian rule, with its own king, Zedekiah. After ten years of this, Zedekiah led a rebellion against Babylon. The rebellion was crushed, and so was the temple and most of Jerusalem. But through the prophet, Zedekiah is reassured that for him, at least, it would not end in violence. He would be carted off to Babylon and live out his days there.

Few of us have been in a position like Zedekiah. But all of us have had periods in our lives when it has felt as though we were being crushed. It’s easy for me to get angry, to demand to know where God is, why things aren’t turning out the way I think they should. God reminds us through the Word that God has our back. That whatever happens, God is with us.

Gracious God, when things seem bleak, help me to trust in your presence. Amen.
