Jeremiah 33:19-26, Covenant with David

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Thus says the Lord: If any of you could break my covenant with the day and my covenant with the night, so that day and night would not come at their appointed time, only then could my covenant with my servant David be broken.
— Jeremiah 33:20-21a

NL Daily Devotion for Friday, December 6, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

God is funny, and I think a little sarcastic sometimes. Whenever I write a children’s play, Jesus always turns out a little sassy. And this passage is one of the reasons. At the time, the kingdom of Judah was under foreign control—because of their own rejection of God—and the people were likely questioning God’s promise that they would always be ruled by someone in the line of King David. God says, essentially, “Dudes, seriously. If you could make me alter the pattern of day and night, then maybe, just maybe you’d have a shot at breaking my covenant with David.” In other words, not a chance.

God keeps God’s promises and there’s nothing we can do—no matter how rotten we are—to make God break those promises to us. When we are feeling unworthy, God reminds us, “Dude, let it go. You literally can’t make me walk away from you.”

Constant God, thank you for always keeping your promises to me. Amen.
