James 1:17-18, Birth by the Word of Truth

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. In fulfilment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

“Birth by the word of truth.” Here is our God once more mothering us into existence not through the flesh of human birth, but through the spirit of God’s word. Our second birth is not about placing us above creation, but about calling us into being “doers of the word” (James 1:22). As God’s children, we have a job to do: living in love and service to those around us. Acting God’s love to others rather than simply telling them. Our heavenly parent raises us up to be prophets and servants in the way of Jesus, our sibling. But like a parent, God doesn’t just give us this intimidating job and send us on our way. God is always with us, teaching (and re-teaching and re-teaching) and modeling, having compassion for us where we fall short, forgiving our rebellion, and walking alongside us in whatever stumbling attempts we make along our paths.

When have I felt the presence of God as a parent guiding me on my path?
