Isaiah 24:1-23, Impending Judgment on the Earth

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

And it shall be, as with the people, so with the priest;
as with the slave, so with his master;
as with the maid, so with her mistress;
as with the buyer, so with the seller;
as with the lender, so with the borrower;
as with the creditor, so with the debtor.

It’s telling, that in the second line of today’s reading that the author lists all the groups to which judgment shall be placed. Both the “lower” classes and the “upper” classes are included in this list.

Recently, I’ve been doing personally lots of studying of ancient history, especially of early Greek and Roman history. One of the things I’ve found is that the ancients in the classical period tended to forget about their fragility just as much as we do today.

Volcanic eruption? Yup. Then everyone’s dead. War? Yup. Lots of ‘em, too. Disease, famine, etc, etc . . . all of what we might consider "acts of God” played their part as well.

I think what this passage reminds us of today, is that with all our technology and ability to stave off disasters, we’re still vulnerable. That vulnerability can be a motivator for us all to turn, once again, to the Creator and Redeemer, Jesus Christ.

God, turn my life to be directed toward you. Remind me that I’m dependent on you. Amen.
