Isaiah 11:1-10, The Peaceful Kingdom

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him,
the spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the spirit of counsel and might,
the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
— Isaiah 11:2

The text for today’s daily reading of the Narrative Lectionary usually falls in Advent in many other lectionaries, including the RCL (Revised Common Lectionary).

For today, though, the image it shares is one of peace and tranquility. (Hence, the nice hot-air balloon picture you see above).

What does peace actually mean though? Is it simply the absence of war or is it something far deeper which convey a sense of being “at peace” not only with others, but yourself?

I tend to believe that the latter applies to commit to full peace. Peace with yourself is not just the knowledge that God is okay with you, but that you’re okay with you. Sometimes, for some, this can be a hard thing. I think the key, though, is a constant reminder that God calls us to a higher standard and that if we’ve met that standard, we need to know that we’re okay. It’s even okay that we fail; we’re only human.

God, give me peace with myself. Amen.
