Hosea 1:1-2:23, Israel’s Infidelity

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

She shall pursue her lovers,
but not overtake them;
and she shall seek them,
but shall not find them.
Then she shall say, ‘I will go
and return to my first husband,
for it was better with me then than now.’
— Hosea 2:7

Today’s daily reading from the Narrative Lectionary deals with Israel’s desire to go after false gods. The theme is a perennial (if not tiresome) recurring topic within the Old Testament.

It’s interesting that there was that much religious diversity in the 1000 years or so during the establishment of Israel. It’s also interesting that Israel’s desire to seek foreign gods is compared to an adulterous relationship. Sexuality always has had power, and its power as a metaphor certainly isn’t lost in the text!

The core issue is that the different, foreign gods (or goddesses) seem enticing and exciting. They promise so much. While tired, old YHWH seems so . . . well, boring.

It’s high time that we see that “the same old” doesn’t have to equate with “boring.” Sometimes, our God is the most exciting of all, because God, after all, is real, and the others are not.

Does the metaphor of sexuality and Israel’s commitment make sense to you?
