Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus

NL Daily Devotion for Thursday, August 1, 2019

by Daniel D. Maurer, Clergy Stuff

Perseverance is never easy!

I take as an appropriate example the very task of writing these devotions!

Once per month, I clear two entire afternoons to write the Narrative Lectionary daily devotions along with my colleagues, Kimberly Leetch and R. Fergus Moir. It takes dedication and gumption. Since I’m a fairly fast writer, it’s not so much the effort of sitting it down and punching it out. The real perseverance comes in knowing what to say when, after hundreds and hundreds of other devotions you’ve written, seem to say the same thing.

Except it isn’t that way.

The Infinite One guides my thoughts to provide for you another daily Word of God. It’s a daunting task, but a real gift too.

The great gift of a relationship with God is that no one day need define the whole of our faith—God provides many opportunities to die daily to sin and turn to God.

All it requires is devotion and a sense of curiosity and wonder. And it’s surprising how light that yoke is upon our necks.

In what ways have you had to find perseverance in the past? How does God keep you going every day? In what ways does the community play a role in this challenge for you?
