Genesis 46:1-27, Joseph Brings the Israelites to Egypt

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

Then he said, ‘I am God, the God of your father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make of you a great nation there. I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again; and Joseph’s own hand shall close your eyes.’
— Genesis 46:3-4

NL Daily Devotion for Saturday, September 28, 2019

by R. Fergus Moir, Clergy Stuff

At the very end of his life, Jacob leaves everything he has known to go live in a foreign land near his beloved son, Joseph. Echoing God’s first call to Abram to leave his home and journey to a distant land, God repeats the covenant with Abram: to make him a great nation. God also alludes to what the future holds—a time when God will have to lead the people back out of Egypt four centuries later.

We never truly arrive in life. Even if we remain physically in one location, we and everything around us continue to change. God promises us we don’t have to be afraid. God is with us come what may.

Faithful God, help me to see your unchanging presence in the midst of everything around me. Amen.
