Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today
“Pharaoh said to his servants, ‘Can we find anyone else like this—one in whom is the spirit of God?’ So Pharaoh said to Joseph, ‘Since God has shown you all this, there is no one so discerning and wise as you. You shall be over my house, and all my people shall order themselves as you command; only with regard to the throne will I be greater than you.’”

Joseph has finally hit the big time! It took thirteen years from the time a seventeen-year-old Joseph was sold into slavery until a 30-year-old Joseph was made second only to Pharaoh, most of that time spent in prison. It seems that in that time, our little Joseph has learned some humility. When he interprets Pharaoh’s dream and offers a plan for dealing with the upcoming famine, he gives the credit to God alone. Pharaoh and his advisers are so impressed that Pharaoh puts Joseph in charge of the whole operation.
That’s right. The king of all Egypt gave absolute power to a foreigner, a former slave and convict. Why? Because he recognized that the “spirit of God” was in Joseph. Pharaoh wasn’t putting his country into the hands of Joseph, but into the hands of God.
God entrusts each of us with a divine purpose, and walks alongside us as we put our God-given gifts into the service of our neighbor. We are the hands and feet of Christ in the world.
Where am I allowing God to act through me in the world?
