Genesis 32:3-21, Jacob Sends Gifts to Esau

Narrative Lectionary Key Verse for Today

For he thought, ‘I may appease him with the present that goes ahead of me, and afterwards I shall see his face; perhaps he will accept me.’ So the present passed on ahead of him; and he himself spent that night in the camp.

In a consumer-driven society, it’s easy to forget that gift giving was once something to appease your enemies. Or, I suppose in the case of Jacob and Esau, it was “fr-enimies” since family was a part of it.

But giving something to another can be a time of joy for both sides. Maybe it’s time we think of ways to give gifts not for the sake to cover appearances, but so that people may begin to understand that we are all brothers and sisters.

What’s your take on gift giving?
